How Do Things Work in Nature? They Just Do.
By ‘That Which is Not’

Nature operates in an astounding, almost magical way. Consider the heart: a vital organ that keeps us alive by pumping blood throughout our bodies. How does it manage this crucial task? The simplest answer is: it just does.

However, beneath this simplicity lies an intricate web of processes. The heart's ability to function seamlessly is a marvel of biological engineering, involving complex interactions between cells, electrical signals, and biochemical reactions. Each heartbeat is the result of finely tuned coordination that scientists and doctors are continually striving to understand more deeply. This quest for knowledge leads to specialisation—cardiologists, biochemists, and other experts devote their careers to studying these processes in detail.

Yet, even with advanced medical language and tools, our understanding remains incomplete. Language, despite its power, can often be misleading. It abstracts and simplifies reality, sometimes obscuring the full picture. Describing the heart’s function with terms like "systole" and "diastole" helps us communicate and teach, but these words can't fully capture the sheer complexity and elegance of the processes they represent.

The same principle applies to something as seemingly simple as a tree growing. Trees, too, just grow. But behind this growth is a symphony of photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, cell division, and more—all happening in perfect harmony. Scientists study these processes, developing fields like botany and ecology to explore how trees interact with their environment, how they adapt, and how they thrive.

So, what is our role in this intricate dance of nature? While we may not fully grasp every detail, we can provide the conditions that allow these natural processes to flourish. For the heart, this means eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding harmful habits. For trees, it involves watering, applying manure, and weeding to ensure they have the nutrients and space they need to grow.

Understanding that we can't control or fully comprehend every aspect of nature's workings encourages us to adopt a supportive role. We create environments where natural processes can occur optimally. By doing so, we respect the inherent wisdom of nature and contribute to the thriving of life around us.

In essence, while the intricacies of how things work in nature might remain partially mysterious, our task is clear: nurture and support the natural processes. This approach not only benefits us and the environment but also fosters a sense of humility and wonder at the incredible world we inhabit.
